The secret to a great shoot: Picking outfits that make you feel like yourself
Let me share a secret: in over a decade of photography, the most common worry I hear is "I have nothing to wear for a shoot.
This is what I call the "Being You dilemma"; that feeling of overwhelm when your wardrobe feels disconnected from a professional gallery. I truly understand this panic because it is very real, but the solution is often simpler than you might think.
You do not need an entirely new wardrobe to look right for the camera. In fact, my favourite portraits often feature clients in their most loved, everyday pieces rather than expensive new outfits.
I want you to focus on your true personality instead of a costume. When you look at your gallery years from now, I want you to see your genuine self shining through, not just a set of brand-new clothes.
I suggest starting with a single "anchor" item that makes you feel wonderful, such as a favourite jumper or a dress that gives you confidence. From there, we can build a palette using pieces you already own. When you feel comfortable, whether as a parent or a business owner, that ease and authenticity show in every frame.
To keep a modern, storyteller feel, I invite you to aim for harmony rather than matching. Instead of identical colours, choose three or four tones that complement each other to let individual personalities shine. I encourage you to see which palette feels most like "you" and the story you want to tell. Outside of these ideas, I also suggest exploring the colours that naturally draw you in during your daily life. Whether it is the palette of your favourite room or a piece of art you love, these personal inspirations often lead to the most authentic choices.
Grab a cup of tea, look around and take a moment to relax and observe the surrounds.
You might notice the spaces where you feel most at home, such as the colours in your favourite room or the textures of a blanket you love. Developing this little bit of curiosity helps you see what truly feels harmonious to you. It is not about following a strict rulebook; it is about noticing the beauty in your everyday life and bringing that same sense of ease into your session.
As you pick out your pieces, look at the lovely textures and more timeless patterns that won't date or distract from your story. While a favourite graphic top might be tempting, large logos or very bold prints can sometimes pull focus away from your face and expressions. Simple knits, linen, or subtle prints add a wonderful depth to the images while keeping the attention exactly where it belongs: on you and your connections.
Our time together is really about your memories, exactly as you are right now. The most important thing to bring is yourself and simply have fun.
Whether we are capturing a quiet family moment or your professional journey, I want you to feel relaxed and entirely at home.
The best images are always the ones where your joy and authenticity shine through the clothes.
